The Joy of Christmas
  • Last week we learned that the preparation of Christmas was done by God
  • Today, we’ll look at who came to see Jesus
  • Luke 2:8 – In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night
  • Luke 2:9 – an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened
  • Luke 2:10-11 – the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord
  • And the angel said… Luke 2:12 – This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger
  • Then… Luke 2:13-14 – suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased
  • What did the shepherds do then? (Luke 2:15) – “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.”
  • So, they… Luke 2:16 – came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger
  • There was someone who had been waiting to see Jesus for a long time
  • Who was it? (Luke 2:25-26) – there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ (Jesus)
  • Luke 2:27 – he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law…
  • Luke 2:28-32 – then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, “Now Lord, You are releasing your bond-servant to depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A Light of revelation to the Gentiles,
    and the glory of Your people Israel.”

Bonus Questions
So… Mary, Joseph, and Jesus had visitors
The Shepherds, then Simeon saw them at the temple
And then they had more visitors, from far away
Who were they? (Matthew 2:1-2) – after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
What is a Magi? – scholars who studied the stars, and we know them as the Wise Men
How many came to see Jesus? – three – no, 482 – no, we don’t know – yes
 
Matthew 2:9 – they went on their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was
When they saw the star – Matthew 2:10 – they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy
Matthew 2:11 – After coming into the house they saw the Child; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him and  then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh
What is frankincense? – an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes
 
What is myrrh? – a resin used throughout history in medicine, perfumery, and incenses
Jesus was born to do what God His father had planned for Him
What was God’s plan for Jesus?
To save all people
It doesn’t matter how rich or poor we are, what country we’re from, or what language we speak
Anyone who repents of his sin and trusts in Jesus will be saved
And… once we are saved, we have the joy of knowing our sins are forgiven and we are part of God’s family
We don’t have to fear death because we know we’ll go to be with Jesus in heaven when we die
This Christmas, the greatest gift you can receive will not be under the Christmas tree or in your stocking
It is the gift God sent of his Son, Jesus – He is the one that brings true joy
